My story:
RUBIO, a big dog in a small body
Rubio is a discarded hunting dog, an old tool that is no longer useful. He is about 4 years old—or at least that’s what we’ve been told 🤷🏻♀️. He is a podenco maneto (short-legged) who used to live in a kennel.
For whatever reason, he was no longer useful to them, and they needed to “get rid of him.” In situations like this, the fact that they surrender a dog is like winning the lottery—yes, just like you’re reading—because there are other ways to “get rid of them,” and you can imagine what those are…
We know that many people think that by doing this we are “helping” hunters, making things easier for them—but that’s not the case. If we have space and we receive a call like this, should we just leave him to his fate?
Going back to Rubio, since he arrived he surprised us with how sociable he is. Some dogs, despite their miserable lives, are just waiting for someone to reach out a hand—and that is RUBIO. He went to a foster home for a few days because of the floods, but he behaved so well that his foster stay has been extended to try to prevent him from having to return to the shelter. He walks beautifully, behaves very well at home, and they even take him to watch the children’s football matches.
Like most adult “mixed-breed” dogs, we know his chances of finding a family are small. But being so good, so small, and so sweet, we hope Rubio will be luckier.
